Windy Conditions make for Exciting Nationals in 1998

Castle Rock Lake near Mauston, Wisconsin was the site for the first annual Inland 20 Scow National Championship Regatta. Regatta headquarters was a small lodge right on the lake with piers for all the boats and cottages nearby for the sailors and spectators. The action got going Friday night with the first ever I20 Uno game, a night that will live in infamy. A new twist on the game rules meant that anyone who played a "Skip" card had to sing a "bad eighties song" and the selections got better as the games wore on into the wee hours.

Saturday dawned cloudy and very windy. Several sailors expressed trepidation, but Principal Race Officer Carl Fritzner led us out into the wind and waves. We raced two races backto-back and the rides downwind under the asymmetrical were incredible. I had never sailed that fast before on any boat. My crew actually had to move forward to keep the bow down!  This is certainly something you don't see often on a scow downwind. Coming screaming into the leeward mark causes you to ask each other, "uh, how exactly are we going to take this thing down?" but it turns out that heading deep downwind takes enough pressure off the big sail that the crew can handle it with confidence, as long as the skipper has a steady hand on the tiller and the traffic is not too intense.

Race #1 was won by scow newcomers Andy and Ann Gratton in their yellow refurbished boat. There were a few capsizes in the first two races, but all were self-rescued. I somehow pulled out a dream start for the second race and was off in the lead to the windward mark and lead to the leeward mark, too. At the rounding, Steve Yost and Pete Huff with "Pizzazz" came in a little cleaner and grabbed the lead. We chased them around the course again but never quite caught them. They held us off manfully on the last beat to take the win.

Jeff Kirchhoff and Erica Mather in "Bushwhacker" recovered back from a capsize in an earlier race to take the gun for Race #3, and we all went in to clean up and go out for a great local smorgasboard dinner, all you can eat. We needed it to bulk up for Sunday's racing because the wind was still blowing and the waves were still white-capping., although the sun came out and the wind changed almost 120 degrees to go northwest.

Steve Yost held off a horde of challengers to win both races on Sunday. The right side of the course was definitely favored from the new wind direction and it was clear from the racing that everyone had gotten pretty familiar with boat-handling in heavy air the day before.  These conditions made for some spectacular sailing and some exciting racing. Thanks to the Commodore Frautschi for making the regatta arrangements. Thanks to Social Chair Mimi Hayashi for driving the second race committee boat and checking on the safety of capsizes. Thanks to Principal Race Officer Carl Fritzner for some great race courses under difficult conditions. And last but not least, thanks to all the competitors for the most fun-filled and good-natured yet competitive regatta I have been to in a long, long time. The "Magik" and I will definitely be back next year!
