1999 INLAND 20 NATIONALS

Posted by: John Hayashi

This year's Nationals was a really great time, what more could you ask for than great sailors and good weather?! The regatta started out for us on Friday night setting up the boat under a gorgeous full moon that reflected all the way across Lake Du Bay.  With good friends and plenty of beverages we all proceeded to rig up in anticipation of Saturday's races. We had a good variety of sailors participating in the event, whether it was the six first-time participants or the veterans of the event, I knew there was going to be good competition the next day.

The conditions on Saturday were ideal, a south wind blowing 10-12 with puffs and a comfortable 75 degrees. The first race, a Windward 2, started off with the fleet pretty tightly packed going into the first mark. The downwind leg remained the same with the majority of boats hanging together and a few people "hunting" out on the fringes. As the race progressed, a few boats broke away and on the ensuing downwind a battle broke out between three boats, H-20, H-1, and H-661. Ultimately, Kyle and Liz Metzloff would pull off the victory in the last two feet with our boat H-20 tipping over on the finish line and floating across for third.

Now that everyone was warmed up and ready to go, the second race had one boat lead pretty much around the whole course; that being the mighty green H-216. Grant Frautschi and Anita Bersie were able to extend their lead around the course with a few boats FL-499, H-644 and H-661 fighting for the next spots. In that second race the final positions showed a healthy fleet inversion with many people sailing their best race. Grant would hold on for the victory in this race.

Following a great lunch provided by the Central Wisconsin Sailing Association, we were back on the course for more racing. The afternoon racing involved more tactics with the center and right sides of the course being the key to winning. In both races quick jibes at the offset paid off with big blasts going down the middle of the course. At no time were you really safe with a lead though.  Numerous times you were able to look back and see people riding big puffs inside you, and you had to resist the urge to jibe and get inside. Up-wind in both races getting to the puffs paid off as long as you kept the boat flat and you worked it hard. It paid off for us, and we pulled out a nice win over Andy Gratton and Kyle Metzloff in the third race.

In the fourth race it was more of the same conditions, but the first leg up the right side was favored if you got off the line and jumped onto port right away you made huge gains.  Again a quick jibe set was the choice for the down-winds as you could ride the puff across the course and set up in the middle. Alec, Emery and Kyle were all tough in this race. At this point H-661 with Alec Chabalowski and Miles Clark were winning the regatta with a one-point lead.

The final race of the National Regatta proved to be the key to winning the championship. With the wind on the start measuring 14-16 and with some small gusts rolling in, the fleet left the starting line pretty bunched up. As everyone hiked and worked their boats up the course the fleet started to spread out. A small pack broke away with Alec and Miles just eating up water The next two boats were Stefan Schmidt and the H-20.  On the downwind, things got exciting with the H-661 tipping on their first jibe. At this point, we were all in a 32 mph puff hammering (and I mean "hammering") towards the leeward mark. Said race officer Dan Mather, "The first three-quarters of the boat were out of the water, so I dropped the binoculars and grabbed the camera.  You could see air under the hull!" Now it became survival and after watching Stefan round the mark and go over, we rode the puff out and doused the 'chute after going almost an extra 1/4 mile. The wise skippers now leading the race took the 'chutes down before the puff hit and rode almost dead down-wind on the jib and main alone. The lead had changed with Kyle and Liz in the H-1 now in first, Andy and Anne Gratton in second and Mike Peters and Aaron Lynn in third.  Paul Bates and Brad Koehn were in fourth, but closing in fast. The last down-wind had Captain Mike augering in on the final jibe with three hundred yards to go and Paul and Brad with H-660 moving up into third.

Overall, this Nationals was a great test of the sailors and many people sailed better than they ever have. The socials events and raffle were great and thanks go to all who donated raffle items. I hope that next year's regatta will be just as much fun. Thanks to everyone for the great time. I would also like to thank my crew, Hovey Tinsman, for all the hard work and hiking he did, it paid off with a great regatta win. See you next year!!
