2002 I-20 National Championship Regatta

Posted by: John Spargo

The Fifth I-20 National Championship Regatta was held at Cedar Lake, Indiana on September 21 and 22, 2002. This is the first time the I-20 fleet had sailed at Cedar Lake, and all of us found both the lake and the yacht club members very pleasant.

Several crews arrived Thursday afternoon and evening. The remainder of the 22 boats and crews came in Friday morning.

There were chalk talks and on-water seminars scheduled all day Friday, but the weather continued cold, cloudy and rainy. Therefore, no on-the-water activity took place, but a lot of people attended the seminars and enjoyed good conversation indoors. A number of presenters shared a lot of accumulated wisdom with a good crowd in attendance. The presenters included Steve Scheck, Leigh Leonard, John Spargo and Jeff Kirchoff.

Saturday morning the sun came out, the breeze was light, and everyone took to their boats and the racecourse. The first race was started in a 5-8 mph breeze from the southwest. With the course set across the lake, the legs were short, which kept the fleet close together. The first four or five boats in the lead were very close throughout the race. Emily Green and Dan Zarnstorff finished first with Joe Bitter and Brian Brickler on H-5 second. Tim Sugar and Darby Rennecker finished in third place. A couple of new front challengers, Al and Sandy Pezoldt, were in second place at one time in this race, and finished fourth.

There was a lunch break after the first race, which both John and Jim feel strongly should always be the case! :-)

The second race found the wind had shifted a little more south and had lightened some. The finish found Emily and Dan with another first and John Hayashi and Anita Bersie in second place. John Spargo and Jim Brust were in third with Grant Frautschi and Nadine Nassif close behind in fourth. The final race of the afternoon was started as the breeze continued to diminish. Most boats were about to complete the first lap when the race committee abandoned the race due to the breeze becoming excessively shifty and dying away to virtually nothing. Naturally, immediately thereafter the wind came up beautifully, but too late!

Saturday night the Cedar Lake Yacht Club members put on a terrific catfish/chicken banquet for all the sailors.

As daylight brightened Sunday morning, a light mist/drizzle was in the air. The sailors were discussing postponement when the race committee said, “Let’s go! The sailors left the docks in a light drizzle, which stopped within a few minutes. A heavy fog only about 10 feet thick developed across the lake, which made an incredible sight. Everyone could see the top half of everyone else’s mast, but couldn’t see the other boats. It looked very much like iceboats in a light snow. It was beautiful! When the fog burned off, the first race started with the wind from the south. This provided much longer legs than the races on Saturday, because the length of the lake is north and south. During this third race, large holes developed and the light wind continued to shift to the west. Toward the end of the race, the left gate and the right side of the course were heavily favored. The last windward leg, which was a one-tack beat, caused the boats to really spread out. John and Jim, on their new boat, took first place. Tim and Darby took second, Grant and Nadine were in third and Steve and Leigh finished fourth.

Setting the course for the last race proved a real challenge for the committee as the wind quickly shifted 100 degrees and came from the WNW. The fourth race legs were very short, therefore, and caused everyone to have to sail back and forth across the lake. Large puffs came from the SW causing the boats on the right side of the course to change places many times. The fleet split into two groups, determined by the side of the course each boat had taken on the first beat. Over the last two legs the race became a two boat race, with Steve and Leigh taking first place and John and Jim in second very close behind.

The race committee, with Charles “Chookie” Kilander as PRO, did an excellent job of setting square lines, moving marks when necessary, and determining the lengths of races. We speak for all sailors in thanking all of those involved in providing the racing we enjoyed. We also want to recognize and thank all of the Cedar Lake Yacht Club members for providing great meals, a very nice facility with their remodeled clubhouse, and all the help and support they provided the I-20 sailors and their families. This was a great regatta. Thanks to everyone!
