I-20's on Big Cedar
Posted by: Justin Bolles
With a great weekend of racing in the books, it is not hard to understand
why I-20 sailors might be a little tired. The ILYA Invite at Big Cedar Lake, WI was a test of crew work.
Saturday greeted I-20 sailors with sunny skies, 10-12 MPH
breeze, and 85 degree temperatures, so one could
definitely leave the foul weather gear at home. Even the most fair
weather sailor would have to admit, this is picture perfect weather.
And with picture perfect weather comes picture perfect sailing.
The
wind direction would only allow for 1/2 mile courses, so a lot of laps
were necessary this weekend. The first two races were sailed back to
back in shifty and gusty winds, each requiring five laps before you
could be done. After 10 spinnaker sets and takedowns, the I-20 fleet
was ready for lunch. Aaron Lynn and Steven Catlin traded 1st and 2nds
the first two races, with John Spargo not far behind.
The
afternoon brought more breeze and more great racing. The first race
was an endurance race, as the I-20 counted 6 laps before the winning
gun went off. The big breeze and short courses made for quick rides
downwind. The fourth and final race of the day was 4 laps, with Aaron
Lynn winning both afternoon races.
With 20 sets and takedowns in
their pockets, the I-20s sailors are dialed in and a little worn out.
Sunday had the same sunny skies and high temps, but the wind was a little softer. A light, shifty breeze of 4 to 6 MPH made the course challenging. Catching the right puff heading downwind could mean the difference between winning the race and fading to the back of the pack. Steven Catlin once again made all the right calls on Sunday's lone race, but it was Aaron Lynn who would prevail for the weekend.
A special thanks to Rick Trester and the
Cedar Lake Yacht Club. The event was first class and even
with the wind direction being a little big difficult, the race
committee did a great job. Congratulations to Aaron Lynn, the 2009 ILYA Invite Champion.
